The University of the West Indies (UWI) dominated the UWI/UTech sports championships on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the UWI, Mona Bowl after winning defending Champions the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech), with a win of 4 out of 7 matches.

It was an atmosphere of rivalry as the exuberant UTech Knights and the UWI Pelicans came out to watch the annual sports championships at the red and yellow decorated UWI, Mona Bowl last Saturday.  Students from both campuses were scattered about, moving from one match to the next. In high spirits the defending champions, the UTech Knights shouted “UTech! Knights!” as they took root in the stands as the games begun.

At approximately 11:00AM, the cricket match was underway as the first competition of the day. The pelicans won the toss and decided to bat first, leaving the Knights to field for their victory. The Knights seized the morning with a win in the first match of the day. The playing field was soon leveled as the pelicans took charge of the netball match and won the Knights with a score of 12-10.

The day became even more nerve-racking as Rugby was next item on the agenda. The Knights secured back their lead by winning the Rugby competition, leaving the overall match scores at 2-1. Not long after the volleyball match also came to an end, dramatically leveling the match score to 2-2 as the Pelicans took the victory.

Male and female football steered the competition into a deadlock when the Pelicans won the female match with as score of 3-0 and the Knights won the male round of the combat.

With the games now showing scores of 3-3, it was down to the final match to break the standstill. The Basketball teams will not only be playing for the basketball title but also the title of the championship for their respective schools.

It was probably the most intense match of the day as the hopes of many rested in the hands of each play. Both teams fought hard to keep the game in their control. As the match stretched on, it became a little clearer who had the upper hand. With the score at 41-38 in favour of the Pelicans, the Knights begun to lag fearfully behind. Time sped on and the Pelicans kept in line with it. Final score at the end of the match was 66-61 with the pelicans victorious.

“The Queen stopped appointing Knights long time”

bragged Trishaun Blake a Pelican Basketball supporter. The torch was now burning bright in the Pelican camp with UWI now the new champions of the UWI/UTech games 2016.
